PDC approves resolution urging Lake Sebu town mayor to implement the Philippine Fishery Code

The Provincial Development Council has approved the resolution urging the Local Chief Executive of Lake Sebu to implement the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 to ensure the rational and sustainable development, management, and conservation of the fishery and aquatic resources in Philippine waters.
Based on Republic Act 10654, which is ” An act to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, amending Republic Act 8550, otherwise known as ” Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998″, there is a need to adopt the precautionary principle and manage the fishery and aquatic resources, in a manner consistent with the concept of an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management and integrated coastal area management in specific natural fishery management areas, appropriately supported by research, technical services and guidance provided by the State.
The resolution came about after the recent fish kill or “Kamahong” occurred again on the scenic waters of Lake Sebu in January this year which caused huge damage to the fish cage operators.
Reports from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist reveal that more than Php17 million worth of damages were caused by the fishkill that affect the areas of sitio Rosas, Lot 70, Ilang-ilang, Tufokol,Pag-asa, San Miguel, Bacdulong and Sbu udi.
Earlier, the Provincial Environment and Management Office proposed the imposition of a 10-percent utilization limit as part of the rehabilitation process to get rid of the massive fish kill.
The PDC urges the Lake Sebu town mayor to impose stricter rules before the issuance of permits to fish cage operators.
Part of the resolution also includes the reorganization of the Lake Sebu Rehabilitation, Conservation and Development Council (LSRCDC) and the inclusion of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Allah Valley Landscape Development Alliance (AVLDA) as members of the council.
