PEMO to enhance Hydrophonics Project in Lake Sebu for eco-tourism

Provincial Environment Management Officer Siegfred Flaviano disclosed that their office will further develop or enhance the existing Hydrophonics Project in Lake Sebu, the eco-cultural destination of South Cotabato, to boost the town’s eco-tourism potential

Speaking during the recent Kapihan sa Kapitolyo media forum sponsored by the PGO – Information Division, PEMO Flaviano stressed that hydrophonics can improve the level of disolvef oxygen in the lake where tilapia fish is raised by inland fisherfolks as a means of livelihood.

A decrease in the level of oxygen due to continuous rain which regularly  happen in the lake, according to Flaviano, causes fishkill resulting to death by the tons to the cultured tilappia.

The project which was started by PEMO – Forest & Inland Water Division in partnership with RD Foundation a few years ago near a newly-constructed hotel, consisted of a long floating bamboo bed where letuuce and strawberry are planted in coconut shell (or coco peat).

Flaviano revealed that nearby barangays or communities in the area have already adapted the project since it started, but he added that they will further develop it to sustain not only for its benefit in reducing the dissolved oxygen level in the lake but also for sustaining it the means of livelihood for the the community.
